Commencement

Honorary Degrees

Each year Brown bestows honorary degrees on a diverse group of scholars, artists and leaders recognized for exceptional achievement.

Honorary degrees are awarded by the Board of Fellows of the Brown Corporation and are conferred by the University president — in English and in Latin — during Commencement exercises on the College Green.

Brown may award any of the following honorary degrees:

  • Doctor of Fine Art (DFA)
  • Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD)
  • Doctor of Laws (LLD)
  • Doctor of Letters (Litt.D.)
  • Doctor of Medical Sciences (DMS)
  • Doctor of Music (Mus.D.)
  • Doctor of Science (Sc.D.)

The year’s honorary degree recipients are announced in the spring.

Past Recipients

Dating back to the first Commencement in 1769, the Board of Fellows of the Brown Corporation has bestowed honorary degrees upon individuals of distinction and accomplishment.
