9:45 A.M.
The University Procession steps off through Faunce Arch promptly at 9:45 a.m. and is led by the chief marshal, a member of the 50th Reunion class. All graduating students march through the Van Wickle Gates, which swing open twice a year: inward to admit incoming students during Convocation and outward to discharge the new graduates during Commencement.
Alumni who have returned for Reunion march with their classes. Once the last person is through the Van Wickle Gates, the Procession inverts and alumni and undergraduates continue down College Street, with each participant applauding the others.
Where to Watch the Procession
The University Procession is livestreamed and viewable by friends and family all over the world. Guests attending Commencement are strongly advised to watch the Procession livestream from College Green (for guests of graduating seniors or master’s students) or from Pembroke Field (for graduating doctoral students). Viewing the livestream from the ceremony location ensures that guests will be seated in time, particularly for the Doctoral Ceremony. This location also offers a clearer view of the Procession, which involves about 7,000 participants lined up along the route, making photography and visibility challenging. The Van Wickle Gates will remain open until 6 p.m. Monday for photo opportunities.
